Library Link: The balloon guys are back!

Airdrie Public Library’s Summer Reading Program (SRP) will soon wrap up for the year. To help us celebrate, we are thrilled to welcome back balloon sculptors Chris Burylo and Stephon Diachuk. This duo will bring bigger balloons and more surprises this year.

From their unique magic to their twisted juggling humour, these non-stop entertainers are prepared to reach new heights with this year’s balloon build entitled El Dorado: The Amazonian Lost City of Gold. This is a fictional city that the Spanish actually searched for in the 1500s.

The build will include a 14-foot temple made out of golden balloons and highlighted by a pair of trees that will grow up to the ceiling. The whole scene will be overgrown with vines and flowers. An important individual in the history of El Dorado is the king, who dusted his skin with gold; look for this colourful character.

In behind the trees and vines, there will be a secret entrance. There might also be a snake (whose tail would enter the temple through the roof), jungle natives, Tarzan, Indiana Jones, a river, or a tree fort – maybe even a 12-foot gorilla... It all depends on how many balloons these two can blow up.

All of Airdrie is invited to pop by and watch Stephon and Chris at work as they build this impressive structure. They’ll be building El Dorado from August 16 to 19, during regular library hours.

Visit the library’s website at www.airdriepubliclibrary.ca for more information about this great event and plan to pop by to watch these two amazing artists at work.

Chris “The Card Eater” Burylo

Chris began performing as an entertainer seven years ago. He launched the circus team called the Flower Children and geared up the team to perform in the fields of fire juggling, face painting, balloon art, and magic. For the past few years, Chris has performed solely for the benefit of charity and community groups. We are very pleased to welcome him back this summer!

Stephon “Wally” Diachuk

Stephon has taught circus skills with the Calgary Circus School and for the past few years, he has had the pleasure to perform alongside Calgary’s top circus troops including The Flower Children and Cirque du Who. Stephon is well versed in the arts of juggling, unicycling, fire eating/breathing, and of course – balloon art. Stephon is pleased to be working with the Library this summer and we are very excited to have him here!
