Irricana to host trade fair

The Irricana Economic Development and Tourism Committee is organizing this year’s fall trade fair at the Irricana Recreation Centre, Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Irricana Economic Development and Tourism Committee is organizing this year’s fall trade fair at the Irricana Recreation Centre, Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual event is designed to promote Irricana licensed businesses and local service groups. The event will also feature demonstrations, such as Tae Kwon Do and belly dancing, as well as a community garden exhibition.

“It is really about networking,” said Brenda Campbell, committee spokesperson. “There are a lot of home-based businesses that otherwise people don’t know exist, so it is a really good way to let people know you are out there.”

Campbell is expecting between 30 and 40 vendors and service groups, such as the Lions Club, to take part in the event.

“We might be a small town with a pretty minimal amount of store-front businesses, but we do have quite a few home-based businesses that can offer services,” said Campbell.

The theme of this year’s trade fair is the upcoming municipal election, and candidates are welcome to participate at the trade fair in the candidate’s booth.

Centennial raffle items, including an original watercolour painting, hand made log cabin quilt and handcrafted mosaic cutting board, will be on display. Tickets for the raffle will also be on sale. According to Campbell, the committee is hoping to build on the country fair portion of the trade fair in coming years. This year, the fair will have a quilt exhibit.

“We are trying to bring it back to a more traditional type of country fair,” said Campbell. “Hopefully next year, for our centennial, it will be a full country fair.”

Deb Dunn is organizing the quilt exhibit and is hoping to display as many quilts as possible.

“If you have a quilt, whether you did it or your granny did it, that you wouldn’t mind letting us display over the weekend at the quilt exhibition (that would be great),” said Dunn. “It will be a nice addition to the fall fair.”
