For 2010, both body styles and all trim levels will be equipped with standard anti-lock brakes plus traction and stability control, items that will likely become mandatory on all vehicles in a couple of years.

As well, Ford’s newest bright idea, MyKey, will also be built into every Focus.

When activated, the system will limit top speed, fix the traction-control switch to the “on” position and limit the audio system to 44 per cent of maximum volume.

(You can hear the sounds of parents applauding at this news.)

Keeping the Focus on the move remains the responsibility of a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic.

However, the sporty SES coupe can be had with a 143-horsepower variant of the 2.0 when equipped with a manual gearbox and sport-tuned exhaust. The SES coupe’s performance nature is also reinforced with its unique front and rear styling, a roof-mounted spoiler and standard 17-inch alloy wheels in place of 16-inch rims.

A numerically higher final-drive gear ratio helps produce quicker acceleration and the coupe’s exhaust note now exudes more of a bark than a rasp. Ford hopes these character-changing mods will translate into more youthful buyers for its already-popular small car.

The rest of the coupe and sedan lineup continues to resemble a junior edition of the mid-size Fusion sedan.

The dashboard on up-level models is covered in a silver metallic coating and an available ambient lighting system, similar to what’s currently offered in the Mustang, allows selection of one of seven different shades by means of a dash-mounted switch.

For 2010, the coupe comes in two trim levels while the sedan comes in four.

Base models include air conditioning, power accessories and remote keyless entry.
