A new organization has formed in Beiseker in hopes of creating and maintaining recreational facilities in the village.

The Beiseker Parks and Trails Society is a grassroots, non-profit organization, consisting of about 10 residents, which is fundraising for upcoming projects.

“We were formed with the desire to enhance our community,” said member Julie Donegan, adding the group had its first meeting in early spring. “We are all long-time residents, and we plan on being here longer.”

The group has been active this summer creating a community garden and fundraising to convert a skateboard park into a year-round recreational site by building an outdoor rink, which will be dismantled in the summer. It also hopes to build a half-pipe in the park.

The society raised more than $1,200 towards that project by holding the silent auction at the Aaron Pritchett concert, Aug. 17.

“The silent auction was well received,” said Donegan. “We were absolutely thrilled with the amount raised. We pretty much sold out.”

Donegan said the group welcomes volunteers and new members.

The next big project is to build a trail system around the perimeter of the village. The group is also looking to do some general upkeep around the community and to install some playground equipment in Friendship Park near the ball diamonds.

Brenda Hnybida, Beiseker councillor and chair of the trails society, said the community support for the society and the organization has been impressive.

“The community has been great…they all support what we are doing,” said Hnybida. “Most of the people on the board have young kids, so they really want to get involved in the community. It is really nice to have these young families come forward.”
