The second annual Alberta Wish Trail Ride was a successful event resulting in a large donation to the Children’s Wish Foundation. The Trail Ride committee turned over a cheque, Sept. 13, to the Foundation for $26,300, the total funds collected at the ride on Aug. 21.

“We’re really pleased to make this contribution which will help Alberta children at a difficult time in their lives,” said Trail Ride committee chair Irene White. “We’re also pleased to see this event grow in terms of what we’re able to donate.”

This year, 65 horses and riders took part in the event, which took place in Kanaskis Country. Last year, in its inaugural year, the ride raised about $20,000.

“Children’s Wish is extremely grateful to the Alberta Wish Trail Ride for raising a phenomenal amount of money again this year,” said Megan Innes, chapter fundraising coordinator Alberta and Northwest Territories. According to Innes, each year, the foundation grants between two and six horse wishes a year. The organization is currently in the process of granting wishes to 139 Albertans ages three to 17.

“(We) are so excited to be a part of an annual event that combines horse enthusiasts with raising money for deserving kids,” said Innes. “With these funds we are able to ensure our legacy of never denying an eligible child their most heartfelt wish. Thanks for including us in this wonderful event,” said Innes.

Riders were provided with a pancake breakfast and beef on a bun at the end of the ride. The day also featured prizes and entertainment. Lia Meiseberg, a 16-year-old rider who was visiting from Germany, won the top prize, a saddle donated by Frontier Western Shop in Claresholm.

“That was amazing,” said White. “Everyone seemed happy; everyone was having a good time. It was a perfect day.”

Thanks to donations, the trail ride committee kept its budget to $500.

“I’m awestruck at the support we receive for this event,” she said. “As soon as I tell people what we’re doing, they’re eager to assist with prizes, food and everything else we need. The volunteers give us their time and energy and everyone works to support the event and the foundation’s work with the children.”
