WINNER: Louise Groves $5,195
“I spent a lot of time in a curling rink. Everyone supported it and it was the community thing to do.”
“I had an awesome day,” laughed Louise Groves of Edmonton. “It feels unbelievable. My daughter texted me late last night to tell me to check my tickets, but I didn’t even hear the phone. First thing this morning, I saw her message, double checked my tickets and I started to cry. It was so unexpected and I am so thrilled.”
Congratulations to Louise for winning Monday’s big cash prize of $5,195 in Curling Alberta’s 50/50 raffle. As part of the Share the Love with Your Club campaign, a portion of the proceeds from her ticket purchase will directly support her club of choice, the Jasper Place Curling Club.
Louise grew up in the small community of Riviere Qui Barre, in central Alberta where their two-sheet rink was a key community hub. “My dad was involved in making the ice and my mom was in charge of concession, so I spent a lot of time in a curling rink,” remembered Louise. “Everyone supported it and it was the community thing to do. I fell in love with the sport then because Mom and Dad loved it. I still love it and watch it on TV all the time.”
Today Louise has two adult children and three grandchildren. She is a Transit Driver for the City of Edmonton and loves to spend time outdoors taking care of her yard. This fall she is hoping to get back on the ice after a long hiatus and give Stick Curling a try. As for her winnings, once the restrictions ease, Louise is hoping to treat herself to a weekend somewhere special.
