Fri. Mar 12: 50/50 Raffle Winner of $13,760

The championship round is heating up and the momentum is building for Curling Alberta’s 50/50 Raffle. Friday’s total jackpot was $27,520 and Nancy Baker of Lethbridge was the lucky winner, taking home the big cash prize of $13,760.

“For us it’s more of a family social thing to watch the games, especially with my Mom,” said Nancy. “We started playing the 50/50 during the Scotties and kept doing it through the Brier. “I totally didn’t expect to win because I entered a few times.”

The Bakers are a southern Alberta farm family that recently moved to Lethbridge. Her husband continues to farm and Nancy works as a Respiratory Therapist, focusing on community care. They have three daughters, and the eldest has followed in her footsteps. Their second daughter is a student at SAIT, and their youngest is looking forward to being on campus at the University of British Columbia in September. Nancy used to curl in high school and returned to the sport a couple of years ago. She plays in the fun leagues out of the Lethbridge Curling Club.

So how does it feel to win?

“It was really unexpected and it’s just wonderful,” said Nancy. “It couldn’t have come at a better time when we have to pay for UBC.”

Besides helping to pay for college and university. Nancy is looking forward to buying a set of golf clubs. “We are always so frugal about things like that, but it’s also a good sport that gets you outside, so that will be a big treat.”
