Mayor Brown to take questions from local youth

Children will have the chance to don their journalistic hats and grill Airdrie's mayor May 13, when Mayor Peter Brown hosts a Facebook Live video to field questions about the COVID-19 pandemic from local youth.

Brown said the question-and-answer session is about connecting youth with political leadership.

“[Kids] have been as impacted as much as anyone else,” he said. “They miss their friends and being able to get out to do the things they want to do. So for me, it’s all about the kids and this session will provide them the opportunity to ask those questions.”

Brown said he got the idea from a mayor in another community, who did the same thing.

“It worked quite well there, so I thought I’d give it a shot here in Airdrie, and see how well it’s received,“ he said.

“I know a lot of what we’ve done so far has been geared towards parents, so I want to make sure we’re doing our part to make sure our kids are looked after and they have the opportunity to ask questions of their political leadership.“

Youth who wish to ask something during the session are asked to send their questions ahead of time through the City of Airdrie Facebook messages, or to ask Brown during the live video.

Brown said there are no parameters for the Q&A, such as the maximum age of participants or how much time will be allotted to each question.

“I hope people participate and that they’re looking forward to the event,” he said.

The session will take place from 2 to 2:30 p.m. on Facebook.
