Cochrane Facebook contest encourages shopping local

A new Facebook contest is encouraging Cochranites to continue shopping at local businesses, which are experiencing reductions in sales as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tapestry Church launched the Cochrane Strong Facebook page March 31. According to the church’s pastor, Kelly Reid, the page will facilitate a contest that will run until April 15.

"It’s just a way to encourage people to take care of our local businesses,” he said. “We want to be a blessing to them, as well.”

As part of the contest, participants are asked to submit selfies to the Facebook page, showing they purchased an item from one of the participating businesses. For every unique business a participant purchases from, an entry with their name will be submitted into a raffle, according to Reid, which will be drawn April 15.

The winner of the raffle will receive $150 worth of gift cards to the participating businesses, paid for by Tapestry Church. The deadline for entries is April 13 at 8 p.m.

As of April 1 at 11 a.m., participating businesses include:

  • Mucho Burrito
  • Mehtab Restaurant
  • Donair-on-the-Run
  • Cochrane Coffee Traders
  • The Chopped Leaf
  • Good Earth Coffeehouse
  • Guy's Cafe & Bakery
  • Cobs Bread
  • Tremar Computer Solutions
  • Krispy Chicken
  • Cochrane Home Hardware
  • Taxi 4 U
  • Cochrane Food Bank

“We just want, as a church, to remind our people that some of these restaurants are still open, and they’re not getting a whole lot of income right now,” said Reid, adding three more businesses will be added soon. “If there’s a way to support them right now, we want to do that.”

Reid said contest participants are asked to practice social distancing if they are buying products in person.

If the contest is a hit, he added, the church will do another draw with a new set of businesses, starting April 16.
