Airdrie's active case count drops back to 60, as Hinshaw urges vigilance over long weekend

Airdrie has recorded four additional recoveries since Feb. 10 as active COVID-19 cases in the city are now at 64.

Airdrie has recorded four additional recoveries of COVID-19 since Feb. 10, as active cases in the city dropped back down to 60.

According to the airdrie.ca, there have been a total of 1,806 cases locally, with 1,729 Airdronians having recovered from the virus and 17 deaths being reported.

Provincially, 351 new cases of COVID-19 were identified on Feb. 11. The new cases mean there are 5,501 active cases in the province – down 204 from the day before – and there have been a total of 127,921 cases since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, 120,676 Albertans have recovered from COVID-19, 397 patients are in hospital and 71 Albertans are in intensive care units.

In total, 1,744 deaths have been reported in the province due to the virus.

Cases continue to impact five Airdrie schools that currently remain on the provincial COVID-19 status map. George McDougall High School and Bert Church High School are still listed under "outbreak" status, with 10-plus and five-to-nine cases of COVID-19, respectively. St. Veronica School, École francophone d'Airdrie and Herons Crossing School are listed under "alert" status, meaning they have reported two to four cases each.

Around the city, the Bethany Care Centre remains the sole local local facility on the government's list of COVID-19 outbreaks. According to the retirement home's daily bulletin, one employee was confirmed to still have the virus as of Feb. 11.

Rocky View County (RVC) is reporting 35 active cases as of Feb. 11 – down two from the day previous. COVID-19 outbreaks in RVC are reported at five facilities in Balzac, including the Harmony Beef meat processing plant, the Wal-Mart logistics centre, the Amazon Fulfilment Centre, the Sobeys Distribution Centre and Dexterra Group.

In RVC, Khalsa School Calgary Educational Foundation has been added to the COVID-19 school status map under "alert" status.

On the east side of the county, Chestermere is now at 61 active cases, while out west, Cochrane remains at just seven cases.

Some Chestermere schools continue to be impacted by the virus. Prairie Waters Elementary School and Rainbow Creek Elementary School are listed under "alert" status on the government's COVID-19 school status map, while Chestermere High School and Chestermere Lake Middle School have been listed under "outbreak" status.

As of Feb. 10, 135,575 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta. To date, 42,162 Albertans have been fully immunized with two doses of a vaccine. Sixty adverse events following immunization have been reported to Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Chief medical health officer Deena Hinshaw asked Albertans to remain safe and respect public health orders during the long weekend during her daily update on Feb. 11.

"In a typical year, we would be spending this long weekend gathering with our closest family and friends," she said. "However, this is anything but a typical time. Just like other recent holidays, we need to celebrate this long weekend differently. This year, I’m asking Albertans to celebrate by staying close to home and connecting with their friends, family and community in other ways."

Hinshaw said she knows many people want to gather with friends and extended family in restaurants and inside homes, but that is still against the rules.

"Our numbers are declining, but this virus is still here, and cases can rise quickly if given the chance," she said. "By choosing safe activities, and by making safe choices that prevent the spread, we can all keep cases and hospitalizations trending downwards."
