Airdrie reporting 182 active COVID-19 cases as variants continue to escalate provincewide

After weeks of increases, Airdrie's active number of COVID-19 cases fell by seven from April 4 to 9, with the city reporting 182 active cases as of today.

A daily COVID-19 update page on Airdrie.ca states there have been 2,257 total cases of the virus reported in the city since March 2020. To date, 2,058 Airdronians have recovered from COVID-19 and 17 deaths have been reported.

With spring break nearing its end, cases are confirmed at 10 schools in Airdrie, according to the provincial COVID-19 status map. A.E. Bowers Elementary School is still listed under "outbreak" status, with 10 or more active cases. Northcott Prairie School is also experiencing an outbreak, of five to nine active cases. R.J. Hawkey Elementary School, Nose Creek Elementary School, Atlas Learning Academy Ltd., Meadowbrook School, Ralph McCall School, Our Lady Queen of Peace Elementary School, École Airdrie Middle School and St. Martin de Porres High School have all been listed under "alert" status, meaning they are each reporting two to four active cases. 

Across the province, cases continue to escalate rapidly. According to Alberta.ca, 1,429 new cases were identified on April 8, meaning there are 12,187 active cases in the province. The test positivity rate was 9.4 per cent.

The reported provincial numbers indicate 340 patients are in hospital with the virus as of April 8 and 83 Albertans in intensive care units. These figures are an increase from 292 hospitalizations and 59 ICU admissions on April 1. 

In total, 2,005 deaths have been reported in Alberta from COVID-19 as of April 9, including three new deaths reported April 8.

In terms of COVID-19 variants of concern, the provincial total currently sits at 5,457 active cases. Variant cases accounted for roughly 45 per cent of active cases in Alberta as of April 7.

On the vaccination front, 779,817 doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in Alberta as of April 7, according to government figures. To date, 143,625 Albertans are fully immunized with two doses of a vaccine.

Rocky View County currently sits at 167 active cases as of April 9 – an increase of 57 cases from April 1. Eight schools in RVC are currently on the provincial COVID-19 status map; Khalsa School Calgary Educational Foundation in Conrich, Springbank Middle School and Edge School in Springbank, Springbank Community High School, W.G. Murdoch School in Crossfield, Bearspaw School and Langdon School.

On the east side of the county, Chestermere reported 129 active cases as of April 9. Four area schools are listed on the provincial COVID-19 status map; Chestermere Lake Middle School is experiencing an outbreak of 10 or more cases, Chestermere High School is experiencing an outbreak of more than 10 cases and St. Gabriel the Archangel School is experiencing an outbreak of five to nine cases. Prairie Waters Elementary School was added to the list with two to four active cases.

Out west, Cochrane reported 102 active cases of the virus as of April 9, while five Cochrane schools have confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks. Bow Valley High School and Cochrane High School are experiencing an outbreak of 10 or more cases each, while St. Timothy High School, Glenbow Elementary School and Cochrane Christian Academy are also listed on the government's COVID-19 school status map, with two to four active cases each.
