The works are striking, colourful, and invite the viewer to pause and reflect on this time in our cultural history.

Works from the Hive Mind Art Collective are on library walls until May 5.

While Airdrie Public Library (APL) programmers are on break until May 1, we’d like to direct your attention to the new art display on our walls.

Called Cutting it Up in the '50s, the exhibit is from a group called the Hive Mind Art Collective. This unique collection features female artists in both their collaborative and individual works.

The collective, comprised of Christine Jansen, Karen Jansen, Stephanie Jansen, Thea Person, Saskia Person, Marijke Kalisvaart, and Suzanne Hunter, explores various media and themes as they work together to support one another as artists.

The result of that partnership is a presentation of 23 works of collaborative collage and mixed media.

The artists used Canadian women’s magazines from the 1950s as a source for images.

One artist adds an image and then passes the board to the next person, and so on, until the collage was complete. The results are unique pieces that reveal the exploitation of the era towards women and the expectation that they would find joy in domestication.

The works are striking, colourful, and invite the viewer to pause and reflect on this time in our cultural history.

The exhibit runs until May 5.

While the library may be a bit quieter with the program break, it doesn’t mean there are no programs happening.
