APL summer programs concluding

August is like the Sunday of summer, the saying goes, and while Albertans embrace the slow rush to fall with cautious activity and physical distancing, the month does feel like the calm before the storm.

Many of Airdrie Public Library’s (APL) virtual and live programs are coming to an end this week, with programmers taking a break to prepare for our fall session.

We'd like to give a shout out to Vitreous Glass Inc. for its long-running support of APL's preschool programs.

Mighty Machines hits the brakes this week with a final video from the City of Airdrie.

We'd also like to thank all the participants who stepped up to help the library and film some amazing videos highlighting a variety of big machines.

This year’s event also included a hunt for Gilbert the Reading Fish. The winner of that contest will be announced next week.

The Summer Reading Club (SRC), meanwhile, also closes the book this week after six weeks of logging reading tasks and watching virtual classes in STEM, LEGO, cooking, arts and crafts and outdoor pursuits.

While it was unusual to present SRC in this format, the attendance for our virtual programming was encouraging, and prize winners for special kits and the grand prize of a tablet will be announced next week.

COVID-19 presents uncertainty about the future and what many things – including public school, sports, live entertainment and library programming – will look like.

Here at APL, we are taking the next few weeks to strategize and plan for the future. Coming this fall, look for more live preschool, school-aged, teen and adult programs using Zoom and pre-recorded events.

The thousands of you who watched daily virtual programming during our spring and summer sessions shows just how much Airdronians love their library and the service it provides.

So we press on, doing what we do best – offering access to literacy and learning for all ages.

For more information on all our programs and services, visit airdriepubliclibrary.ca, call 403-948-0600 or drop by the library for your free library card.
