A DeWinton man pleaded guilty to charges on March 7, following a CRA investigation into misleading tax returns.

A DeWinton man has been given a hefty fine after being convicted of tax fraud.

Sean Nethercott was fined $50,000 and given a 12-month conditional sentence after filing several years of misleading tax returns, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) said in a media release on March 8.

A CRA investigation found that Nethercott understated taxable income and claimed false losses, expenses and deductions for the 2014 to 2016 tax years.

He also made false claims for refunds, attempting to evade almost $52,000 in tax and to obtain more than $28,000 in tax credits to which he was not entitled.

Nethercott pleaded guilty to making false or deceptive statements in his T1 Individual Tax Returns at the Alberta Court of Justice on March 7.
