OLDS — Two police vehicles were rammed as they approached a suspicious vehicle in an Olds industrial park at about 3 a.m. on Jan. 2.

That makes four Olds RCMP vehicles struck by another vehicle in the past four weeks, according to Olds RCMP commanding officer Staff Sgt Warren Wright.

“This demonstrates the dangers our officers face while executing their duties,” he said in a news release.

The incident began when Olds RCMP were notified that a suspicious vehicle was operating in the industrial park on Imperial Way in Olds.

As police officers approached, it rammed two police vehicles in an effort to leave the area, “rendering both inoperable,” the release says.

The offending vehicle came to a stop and both occupants inside were arrested. Checks on the vehicle revealed that it was stolen.

Eric Michael Unger, 33 faces nine charges:

• possession of stolen property over $5,000;

• possession of break-in tools;

• flight from police;

• possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;

• dangerous driving;

• failing to comply with release order:

• two counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon; and

• failing to comply with a probation order.

Unger was taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. His next court date is Jan. 8 in the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury.

Another 29-year-old Red Deer man was arrested and has charges pending.
