Love Our Forests: Stop Clearcut will be gathering at the Lineham Day Use Area Kananaskis (South) on Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. to protest Spray Lake Sawmills' (SLS) proposed clearcut in the Upper Highwood Watershed. The group is seeking a Moratorium on logging in Southern Alberta Due to drought  and water shortages.

"We are a collective group of professionals and concerned citizens from Southern Alberta demanding an immediate pause of the Spray Lake Sawmills (1980) Ltd. (SLS) plan to log more than 1,100 hectares in Kananaskis Country’s Upper Highwood drainage as per their 2021 Forest Management Plan," the group states in an email sent out to media on Friday. "This cut has been accelerated from 2026 to December 2023.

They will be demanding this pause due to extreme drought and water shortage conditions.

"Meaningful consultation with impacted communities and stakeholders including the Iyarhe Nakoda community of Eden Valley, the Towns of High River and Okotoks, recreational users, and downstream water rights and allocation holders is needed. The First Nation and Public Consultation sections of the 2021 FMP were inadequate and should be repealed," it goes on to state.

SLS could begin clearcut logging of more than 1,100 hectares in the Highwood Watershed as soon as December 1, the group states..

Featured speakers at the protest will be Colin Smith, of Land Lovers | Bow Bioregion Regeneration Network and Jenny Yeremiy, Calgary Climate Hub.
