Rocky View County brings annual farm tour to the big screen

When COVID shutdowns put a halt on Rocky View County’s annual Agricultural Tour, staff and management at the County knew they had to find a way to keep the spirit of the tour alive.

“It is always so important for us to showcase the Agricultural talent and businesses we have,” says Jeff Fleischer, Manager of Operational Services at Rocky View County. “These tours are a great opportunity for members of the public to experience local farming and food production. We knew we had to innovate to keep them going.”

Fleischer and his team worked with Business and Economic Development and the local Agriculture Service Board to come up with the idea of a short documentary style film that featured four Agribusiness operations.

“Going virtual allowed us to continue supporting local businesses while reaching a broader audience,” says Fleischer. “It was an excellent way to keep the initiative going through the pandemic.”

The video, Agribusiness Success in Rocky View County, featured Long Run Ranch Beef, Harmony Beef, Souto Farms Local Market, and Gatez Farms. The video premiered at SilverCity CrossIron Mills Cinema on April 12, 2022, in a theatre full of video participants, their family and friends, and local dignitaries.

“Rocky View County has a leadership story to tell when it comes to Agribusiness,” says Cole Nelson, Manager of Corporate Business Development at Rocky View County. “From the multi-generational farm families building sustainable operations to the national brands choosing to operate in the County, our Agribusiness industry is thriving.”

Since its release, Agribusiness Success in Rocky View County has been honoured with a Viddy Award, recognizing excellence in video creation, production, and delivery.

“The families and businesses in this video captured the heart of what we were trying to share —celebrating our shared rural history and our future economic success,” says Nelson. “I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen the video to check it out and learn more about Rocky View County.”

After a two-year hiatus, the 2022 Agricultural Tour is taking place in person on July 21. Tickets will be available for purchase in the coming weeks on www.rockyview.ca.
