Meet Geri Holmes, Founder of Life Switch Coaching & Counselling

Geri Holmes, MA, RPC, MPCC, started Life Switch in October of 2007.

During International Women’s Month, AirdrieTODAY is celebrating women that are making a difference in our local business and community landscapes. Meet Geri Holmes, the founder of Life Switch Coaching & Counselling and the author of Tools: Help for Women Repairing a Marriage.

Geri Holmes, MA, RPC, MPCC, started Life Switch in October of 2007.

“I had taken a sabbatical from my leadership career and was making plans to move overseas when my husband had a mental health crisis and left me,” Holmes explains. “I was considering what to do next when I was approached by someone who knew me well and asked if I would be willing to launch a private practice in southern Saskatchewan. By upgrading some of my education, I was able to get credentialing and a license to open a full-time coaching and counselling practice.”

Life Switch offers counselling for individuals, couples, and families. Educational blogs are available on her website and her book is available on her site and on Amazon.

For many people, counselling can be the empowering factor that helps them push through difficult personal or professional issues.

“I have a broad background in leadership, education, family and business,” says Holmes. “I understand the pressures that people experience that put stress on their marriages and families. I also understand the lack of support and aloneness many people face. By supporting people with counselling and coaching skills, I can help them resolve conflicts, address work/life balance, identify personal dysfunctional expectations and beliefs and form better connections with others.”

She credits the success of her business to several factors, noting, “I have a background working with many volunteers and developing leaders. As a result, I have a good grasp of personality strengths and weaknesses. This is helpful in working with couples and families. Also, most of the last fifteen years were spent working in a smaller city where I was the only private practice. As a result, I was exposed to lots of different issues and developed a general knowledge of a lot of different problems. I have gained a good rapport with men and an understanding of men’s issues.  As a mature person, I have walked through some of the tough stages in life and have compassion for people and where they are at. I was married for thirty-seven years, raised children, and moved a lot to accommodate my husband’s mental health challenges. I have learned that even though life isn’t always easy, it can be good.”

Geri moved her practice to Airdrie in July and is spreading the word that she is available locally for in-person, phone, and video appointments. She works with most EAP companies and has a sliding scale for people with income challenges.

She also loves supporting the local, and the global, community.

“I support a children’s charity in the Philippines that works with at-risk and abandoned children. I am also involved in my church and enjoy seeing people get connected to one another when they have no family or friends nearby.”

As a woman in business, she enjoys mentoring both men and women to be active in leadership roles.

“I feel I can encourage people to believe in their gifts and grow them, take some risks and use wisdom and thoughtfulness in making a plan that will succeed. I truly enjoy helping people live better lives. I see lots of relationships healed and strengthened and men and women coping better with life’s challenges.”

Geri is in the process of completing a PhD in counselling.

“I will always love learning and want to keep growing. As for Life Switch, I want to specialize in working with couples and relationships as I believe in the strength of the family unit.”
