Maverick’s Donuts Arrives in Western Canada

Maverick’s Donut Company is a Canadian success story that started in Ottawa in 2016. The concept began as one small location and the owners spent four years refining their recipes. Since then, the brand has grown across Ottawa and Ontario. Now the franchise is entering Western Canada with its first location in Airdrie – thanks to Mike and Beth Lescano.

The Lescanos are successful entrepreneurs that own several businesses, including others in food service. When they learned about Maverick’s, they felt it would be a hit in Airdrie.

Were they right?

"We held our soft opening Nov 29th - Dec 1st and sold out each day. " smiles Mike. "The Official Grand Opening was held Dec 2nd and was met with palatable excitement from customers." "We were humbled to celebrate with our dignitaries and community."

Beth adds, “The slogan is ‘Donuts. Done. Different.’ That difference is the fact that these are cake donuts. We do have some fried fritters but 99% of the menu is cake donuts. These are not the types of donuts you get at a fast-food drive through! Our donuts are made from scratch daily – they are never frozen or shipped in. We make them on site, and we have truly excellent, skilled bakers. Even a day or so later (if you don’t devour your donuts right away) they stay nice and soft. They don’t dry out. Think of them as personal little cakes – that happen to come in 50+ flavours.”

Maverick’s Donuts is passionate about inclusivity, which is why, in part, there are options for vegans.

“Even non vegans love those,” says Beth. “You taste the vegan donut and go, ‘wow…this is vegan?”

The options centre around classics and signatures, with limited edition seasonal flavours added throughout the year.

While every flavour has been a hit, Mike loves the Oreo nirvana while Beth favours the cinnamon swirl and apple fritters. Try those…along with chocolate glazed (or double chocolate glazed for the real chocolate aficionado), peanut free PB&J, lemon ricotta, mint chocolate, or vanilla sprinkle. And that’s just a few of the options.

During these early days of operation, Mike and Beth watch the Oreo, hot chocolate and sprinkle donuts fly off the shelves.

“Our seasonal winter menu runs from November 15 to January 15,” adds Mike. That means now is the time if you want gingerbread glazed or one of those famous hot chocolate donuts.

Although Maverick’s Donuts is new, the Lescanos are planning to do something with the business that they have done with every business they own – community integration. Both love supporting local businesses and the community’s non profits and charitable organizations.

“Airdrie is a city that still feels like a small, close knit town,” says Mike. “Whenever we open a new business, it will be here in Airdrie because we love it here. We are very fortunate to have Maverick’s head office supporting us from Ottawa, but equally fortunate to have such an outpouring of support from Airdrie itself. We are very thankful for the community here. The support is very humbling.”

Both owners would like to give a shout out of appreciation to their staff. “Being new we have had great success in finding a team that has worked so hard to get us ready to open”

Where does Maverick’s Donuts go from here?

Mike and Beth laugh as they reply, “After things settle down after the grand opening… a second location!”
