Seasonal strain

Airdrie Our View

There’s no question the holidays are a joyous time of year – but they can also be a significant burden for anyone struggling with loneliness, stress or finances. With the UCP’s budget cuts forcing Albertans to pick up additional costs for bussing, municipal infrastructure projects, and now, policing services, it’s no wonder a lot of us are feeling the pinch this year.

However, celebrating the season doesn’t need to come with a hefty price tag. Christmas – or whichever tradition your family recognizes this time of year – is an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones, prepare for a fresh start with the coming new year, and show your appreciation for the important people in your life. And none of these things cost money.

To spare yourself the stress of financial strain over the holidays, set a budget for your seasonal spending and stick to it. And if gift-giving is an expense you simply can’t accommodate this year, consider making heartfelt items for the people you care about – those are the gifts that mean the most, anyway. Or just have them over for a visit, because there’s no better way to show you love someone than by giving them your undivided attention.

If you are fortunate enough to have a little extra, consider donating to a hamper program to help those who don’t.

There are so many reasons to feel overwhelmed right now – enjoying the holidays doesn’t have to add to that.
