Weapon complaint investigated at Chestermere Lake Middle School

A student at Chestermere Lake Middle School was taken into custody Oct. 18, following a report a the student had been seen in possession of a handgun style airsoft BB gun at the school, according to Chestermere RCMP.

Staff at the school received information regarding the incident and reported it to RCMP. Police found the weapon hidden in an outdoor trashcan before placing the youth in custody, according to the release.

"The investigation to date has not established any threat to the school or any specific person," the release stated. "No danger was posed to students or staff at the time of this incident and it was confirmed the student does not have access to any other weapons."

RCMP said it appears the weapon was brought to the school "in part for social status."

"Weapons, whether they are real or not, have no place in our schools," Chestermere RCMP Staff Sgt. Mare Wielgosz said in the release. "In partnership with our School Divisions, Chestermere RCMP takes all steps to ensure our schools and students remain safe."

The student was released to their parents and will attend provincial court to face a charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief, according to police. The investigation is ongoing.

Chestermere RCMP reminds residents all matters involving weapons and schools are taken seriously, regardless of the intent of the individual.

"These types of investigations consume police resources and can cause panic among students, staff, parents and the public at large," the release stated.
