Water quality advisory issued for Chestermere Lake

Members of the public are advised to limit exposure to waters at Chestermere Lake due to fecal contamination, until further notice.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a water quality advisory for Anniversary Park Beach, Cove Park Beach, and Sunset Park Beach at Chestermere Lake due to elevated levels of fecal bacteria currently present in the water.

At current levels, the contaminated water could lead to gastrointestinal illness from contact with the water. There is additional risk of contracting skin, ear, and eye infections with water contact, according to an AHS press release.

Those interested in accessing the water at Chestermere Lake are encouraged to take precautions to protect themselves from infection including avoiding contact with water and the face/mouth and ensure hands are washed after being in the water.

"Hand washing can also help protect against skin, ear, and eye infections," read the press release. "As always, visitors and residents are reminded to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any river, lake, or reservoir, at any time.

"Water-borne organisms, including fecal bacteria, can cause vomiting and diarrhea."

The press statement advised AHS Environmental Public Health officers will continue to monitor the water of Anniversary Park Beach, Cove Park Beach, and Sunset Park Beach at Chestermere Lake, and signage will be posted at common beach access points.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
