Springbank Dog Park to celebrate grand opening this weekend

The Springbank Dog Park has officially opened its enclosed grassy terrain to locals and their pooches who wish to roam free this summer. An official opening celebration is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on July 24.

The Springbank Dog Park has officially opened its enclosed grassy terrain to locals and their pooches who wish to roam free this summer.

While the park is already accessible, an official opening celebration is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on July 24. The event will include give-aways for the first 100 pups and canine cookies provided by Springbank Pet Resort.

According to Rocky View County (RVC) Division 2 Councillor Kim McKylor, the four-acre space, located at 130 Commercial Drive near Calaway Park, has become a regional recreation facility for Springbank’s dog-owners and their pups, and is drawing in visitors from Calgary, too.

McKylor added she, her family and their two dogs Tuk and Byrdie have been frequent visitors to the park since it first opened.

“I use the park almost every day with my family and two pups and I have really enjoyed meeting folks in our community there,” she said.

McKylor said she originally brought the motion forward to RVC council in the hopes of making use of some under-utilized municipal reserve lands in the community. She said she wanted to make the area an amenity that could be used by all.

“Creating recreational opportunities, including walking your dog, was a focus for me during my term and I’m pleased that this has been realized in Division 2 and in Rocky View County,” she said.

Dari Lang, acting manager for RVC Recreation, Parks and Community Support, said a report was initially presented to council outlining a need for an off-leash park in the community. She added it was identified as one of the top 10 uses in the recreational master plan, and so it was approved in collaboration with the community.

“There were about two years of collaboration with the community [to determine] recreation requirements within,” she said. “As part of that dialogue, that’s where it was identified [the dog park] was a need in the Springbank community.”

The park includes amenities such as benches, trees for shade, as well as garbage receptacles for canine waste.

“I think it’s an amenity that is going to offer options for the community and for their pets,” she said, adding that the park has already seen many visitors come by, even though it hasn’t officially opened.

The grand opening event will include an appearance by McKylor and fellow RVC representatives.
