An application for a controversial auto-mall in the Springbank area was stalled after Rocky View County (RVC) council voted to table the application rather than grant first reading at a regular meeting Sept. 10.

“I think this application is just a wee bit premature,” said Area Coun. Kevin Hanson. “We’re months away from working through that Area Structure Plan (ASP) for Springbank. The look and feel of this transition area, this gateway, this boundary area between the City and RVC will be far better fleshed out by then. I think it will have a lot more people at ease, going forward.”

Planner Paul Simon said the application was inconsistent with the policies of several statutory plans, including Central Springbank ASP, the City of Calgary/RVC Intermunicipal Development Plan and the County Plan, as the subject land was identified to be developed for country residential purposes.

“I would note this is a preliminary evaluation, and, as council is well aware, administration is currently working on the Central Springbank ASP revisions,” Simon said. “That is intended to be brought before council sometime later this year or early next year.”

In the meantime, Simon said, administration recommended first reading be granted and the applicant be directed to apply for amendments to the current ASP to address the inconsistencies.

Hanson moved to table the application until the ASP revisions were complete. His motion was carried 5-4, with Reeve Greg Boehlke, Deputy Reeve Al Schule and Couns. Jerry Gautreau and Daniel Henn opposed. Boehlke said he preferred to follow council’s recommendation, but supported the ultimate decision.
