Despite administration’s recommendation, Rocky View County (RVC) council voted to reconsider an earlier specialized transportation grant application by the Bragg Creek Snowbirds Seniors Fellowship (BCSSF) during a regular meeting Sept. 24.

According to Theresa Cochran, manager of Recreation, Parks and Community Support, the grant was approved May 14, with $7,500 distributed to the BCSSF. Funds were also distributed at that time to the Rocky View Regional Handibus Society (RVRHS) and qualified individual applicants. However, Cochran noted the requests from all applicants exceeded the available funding by nearly $21,000, and both BCSSF and RVRHS received less than their requested amount.

BCSSF requested to have the application re-evaluated Sept. 6, but administration recommended refusing the request as the funding had already been allocated.

Regardless, Area Coun. Mark Kamachi moved to re-evaluate the request and approve an additional $6,500 for BCSSF, making up the shortfall from their original application.

“Given that their request wasn’t met [but] they have a tremendous increase in required trips, I think it would be nice to help them out,” he said.

The motion was carried 5-4, with Reeve Greg Boehlke and Couns. Samanntha Wright, Crystal Kissel and Kevin Hanson voting against.

“When we have an allotted amount of money for public services, I think we divvy it up as council sees fit at the time,” Boehlke said. “Council saw fit to give [$7,500], which I believe was a raise from the previous year…. The budget is gone.”
