Rocky View Schools (RVS) Superintendent Greg Luterbach announced the appointment of Derek Keenan as the new principal of W.G. Murdoch school in Crossfield in a press release May 8. Keenan will take over his new appointment in August.

Keenan has been an educator and assistant principal for the last 14 years, according to the press release. He taught in both the elementary and high school levels for more than 10 years, the release stated, before he moved on to become the assistant principal of Beiseker Community School.

“A highly-respected administrator in our jurisdiction, [Keenan] is known for his collaborative approach to leadership and commitment to developing staff efficacy across RVS,” Luterbach said in the release. “Over the years, [Keenan] has helped create a culture that empowers teachers to continually examine their practice, take risks and be more innovative. I look forward to seeing him build on the strengths of W.G. Murdoch and help the school continue to thrive.”

RVS' statement added Keenan has successfully created strong and lasting relationships with parents and students, and noted his ability to “facilitate professional growth opportunities for staff to create inclusive learning environments.”

Accrording to the release, Keenan is also invested in the practice of professional learning – he has a master of education in professional learning from the University of Lethbridge, along with his bachelor of education from the University of Alberta and a bachelor of arts from the University of Calgary.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my congratulations to [Keenan] on his assignment as principal of W.G. Murdoch,” Board Chair Todd Brand said in the release. “I am confident he will serve the needs of students and the school community well. We look forward to watching him succeed in his new role.”
