Motorcyclist caught going 64 km/h over speed limit in Chestermere

A motorcyclist with a lead foot will be heading to Chestermere provincial court later this fall, after City of Chestermere Peace Officers clocked him going 104 kilometres per hour (km/h) in a 40 km/h zone July 26.

According to Community Peace Officer Shawn Press, the speeder – a Calgary male – was pulled over on East Chestermere Drive shortly before noon. As he was going 64 km/h over the speed limit, under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, Press said he faces a mandatory court appearance.

“We were able to make contact with that vehicle, and the driver was issued a summons for court, and they will have to appear in the fall to speak to the crown and the judge,” he said.

The motorcyclist’s speed was highly inappropriate, Press said, given the residential area. He added the rider passed directly by Sunset Park – a public park frequented by families and children during the summer months.

“East Chestermere, like most residential communities, has properties that are within close proximity to the main road,” he said. “Not only do we have residents, families and kids running around, who are currently off school, but we have people at those parks, enjoying the beaches during the summer.

“It’s definitely not appropriate to be speeding through that area, let alone…at that rate of speed.”

According to Press, the crown prosecutor will recommend the motorcyclist’s penalty, which he expects will include a substantial fine and possible license suspension. He added the penalty will be based on a number of factors, including the driver’s history abstract.

As the motorcyclist has not yet been found guilty, Press said, he is allowed to continue operating his vehicle until his court appearance.

“If this was a habitual offence for this person, that information is provided to the judge, and the judge will lay the charges,” he said.
