Kim Harris and Justin Gustafson will fill the two vacant seats on Crossfield Town council, according to the unofficial results of an Oct. 19 byelection.

Harris, a community developer for the City of Airdrie, received 382 votes – 48 per cent of the total.

"I want to thank everyone who voted me in as councillor," she said on her candidate Facebook page. "I hope to work hard and make good informed decisions for Crossfield."

Justin Gustafson, who ran unsuccessfully for Mayor in 2017, earned the second most votes. Gustafson and fellow candidate Jo Lambert were neck-and-neck on election night, with Gustafson receiving 195 votes compared to Lambert's 194.

Even though they dropped out of the byelection race early on, Mike Perry and Frank Wallace each received a handful of votes – 18 and nine, respectively.

According to a press release from the Town, the results of the byelection will not be official until Oct. 23 at 12 p.m.

The byelection was triggered in June by the resignations of former councillors Liz Grace and Beth Gabriel. The two read their resignations aloud during a special meeting, citing a dysfunctional and toxic relationship between council and administration.

Once the results are made official, an organizational meeting of Town council will be held Oct. 26 at the Crossfield United Church the to swear in the new councillors. The meeting begins at 8 p.m. and is open to the public.
