At a regular meeting Jan. 14, Rocky View County (RVC) council refused a request to rename a portion of Range Road 31 as “Glencoe Club Gate.”

According to Lora Plante, manager of Information Technology, representatives of Glencoe Golf & Country Club requested a 140-meter portion of the road north of Highway 8 to Elbow River Drive receive the new name. The applicants believed the new name would “provide clear and distinct signage to visitors and guests identifying the roadway to the entrance gate to the private golf club,” she said.

Plante noted roads in the area follow the protocol of using “Elbow River” in the prefix, and added the City of Calgary called attention to an existing road within its bounds with “Glencoe” in the name.

Despite acknowledging the club was a “very good corporate citizen,” Area Coun. Kevin Hanson said since the facility is private, it was likely anyone travelling to it would have been invited and already know where it is. Further, he worried the name change could cause confusion, especially for emergency services.

“There is huge community backlash on this,” he added.

Council voted 8-1 to refuse the application, with Coun. Mark Kamachi the sole opposing vote. Kamachi expressed a desire to work with the club to address its signage needs.
