Rocky View County (RVC) council received an update on the status and repair schedule for hard surface roads in the County during a regular meeting May 28.

According to Manager of Transportation Service Steve Hulsman, paved and chip-sealed roads in the County have seen an above-average number of subgrade or surface failures due to extreme frost conditions this spring.

“As you’re well aware, we had a pretty cold February,” he said. “It drilled the frost down quite deep, and subsequent to that we had numerous failures…. These aren’t potholes – these would be 10-feet-by-10-feet, or 100-feet-long repairs that require mechanical means.”

The road repairs have begun, Hulsman said, and as of May 30, 30 projects were completed with eight left to be completed by contractors and another seven by RVC forces.

Hulsman added the repairs were not anticipated to impact the County’s budget.
