A Chestermere Peace Officer conducting routine patrols Dec. 16, clocked a driver going 126 km/h in a 40 km/h zone – that's a whopping 86 km/h faster than the posted speed limit.

The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. in the 400 block of West Chestermere Drive, according to a City of Chestermere release, when the officer observed a vehicle travelling at an “extremely high rate of speed.”

The vehicle was stopped without incident, the release stated, and the youth driver claimed there was a "mechanical issue" with the vehicle. The driver, from Calgary, was detained and charged with several offences under the Traffic Safety Act. The youth is scheduled to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court in February 2020.

“This incident – especially around the holiday season, and in less than ideal road conditions – clearly demonstrates the gravity of a dangerous situation,” said Trever Bowman, Chestermere’s Peace Officer Sergeant in the release. “Our goal is to ensure the safety of our residents in order to reduce traffic related injuries and deaths related to high-risk driving behaviours (such as this incident), and I am pleased that we were able to address this situation effectively.”
