Crossfield Town councillor questioned about plagiarism

During the public question portion of Crossfield Town council's July 7 meeting, a member of the public asked Coun. Devon Helfrich why he plagiarized a YouTube celebrity’s statement condemning racism.

At the June 16 meeting, each member of council delivered a statement denouncing racism. Helfrich’s speech copied all but a handful of words from a June 3 statement by Logan Paul. Paul’s declaration reckoned with his own white privilege and was made on his podcast, Impaulsive.

“One of my biggest learnings from all of this – and I am embarrassed that it has taken me 25 years to realize this – it is not enough to be 'not racist,'” Paul said. “You have to be anti-racist. Condemn those who feign superiority because of the colour of their skin.

"And most importantly, we must hold our authorities accountable—police officers, politicians, policymakers,” Paul continued. “Attend a protest. Speak up against injustice. If you're white, if you look like me, use your privilege. And for those who do not think that white privilege exists, you are...blind. You are delusional and you are part of the problem."

Reading his statement June 16, Helfrich changed a few of Paul's words to personalize the message but did not attribute the statement to the YouTube star.

In response to the question, Helfrich said his feelings were Paul's, which is why he copied the statement.

“I’m happy to own the fact that most of it was pre-written,” he said. “Given the fact he’s a celebrity, and it’s not uncommon to quote these people in our lives sometimes, that is what it was.”
