The Crossfield Chamber of Commerce is searching for a number of local businesses to get involved with a new e-commerce platform.

The Crossfield Chamber of Commerce is hoping local businesses will get involved with a new e-commerce platform being launched province-wide.

Chamber Market is a new initiative from Alberta Chambers of Commerce. Lani McLeod, executive director with the Crossfield Chamber of Commerce, said the initiative was put in place to provide an e-commerce platform for small businesses throughout Alberta.

“[We would like to] help bring exposure to local businesses and increase their reach by having a well marketed Chamber Market page,” McLeod said.

With businesses’ online presence growing daily and the success of e-commerce corporations like Amazon, McLeod said Chamber Market is designed to give small businesses a more even playing field in the online shopping sphere.

“With more people enjoying the convenience of shopping from home, it’s a great way for people that appreciate shopping from a small business to still be able to have the pluses an e-commerce platform offers,” McLeod said. “For example, I may not be able to find a certain item in my community, but by using Chamber Market, I can tap into a vendor elsewhere in Alberta that can fill that need.”

Locally, McLeod said they are currently looking for their first five business volunteers to get the platform off the ground in Crossfield. Grant funds, according to McLeod, can accommodate up to 58 companies.

“With grant funds, we can offer great local professional photography of items as well as some assistance marketing from a talented local graphic designer,” McLeod said. “We would love to see it grow past there.”

Chamber Market is open to all local small businesses, and McLeod promised business owners do not need to be an active member of the local chamber to participate.

If anyone would like to offer online gift cards through the site, McLeod said the chamber would love to include as many businesses as possible.

“This is a new initiative for our chamber, and we are excited about adding more value to our community and our businesses,” she said.

According to chambermarket.ca, the platform offers a one-stop-shop for buying local products and commissioning local services.

“We’ve brought together all your favourite Alberta makers in one place,” the site stated.

The search for more participating businesses comes after an announcement in July, when the Crossfield Chamber of Commerce became the recipient of more than $10,000 in federal grant money.

The federal shop-local initiative stemmed from a partnership between the Alberta Chamber of Commerce and the Federal Ministry of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade.

The initiative will provide up to $7.2 million in funding toward local business in the prairies. According to a press release, Alberta is eligible to receive up to $4.95 million of funding, with $1.2 million being distributed in the first round.
