HIGH-END DEVELOPMENT
Rocky View County council approved a conceptual scheme for a 40.85-acre plot of land in Springbank. The area is planned to be developed into a nine-lot private community.

Rocky View County (RVC) council approved the Atkins Conceptual Scheme and accompanying land use redesignation at its May 22 meeting. According to RVC planner Johnson Kwan, the adopted conceptual scheme will provide a policy framework to guide the future development of a 40.85-acre, nine-lot private community in Springbank, approximately 1.5 kilometres west of Calgary at the northwest junction of Range Road 25 and Lower Springbank Road. Council unanimously passed three readings to the Conceptual Scheme bylaw, and amended the Central Springbank Area Structure Plan (ASP) to include the newly-adopted conceptual scheme. Council also voted unanimously to approve a redesignation on land within the conceptual scheme area to facilitate a multi-lot subdivision.

FireSmart Committee

Seven Members at Large were appointed by council to serve on the Bragg Creek FireSmart Committee. According to administration’s report, FireSmart is “a national program that assists with managing potential wildfires and is designed to help residents reduce the chance of their property being affected by wildfire.” The committee was established at a meeting March 27, where Coun. Mark Kamachi was appointed as the council representative. Kamachi will be joined on the committee by David Rupert, Gary Nikiforuk, Jorge de Freitas, Mark Betts, Michele Longo, Peter Dwan and Roche Herbst, who will sit as Members at Large until council’s organizational meeting in October. Council also amended the committee’s Terms of Reference to require a minimum of six members, rather than a maximum of six. “This would allow for more Members at Large to be appointed to the committee with a focus on increasing the geographical balance on the committee, as there were no applicants from west Bragg Creek,” said Fire Chief Randy Smith.

Highway Safety Audit

Council also voted unanimously to submit a letter to the Minister of Transportation requesting a safety audit on Highway 9, from Highway 1 north to the Town of Beiseker. According to administration’s report, General Manager of Infrastructure and Operations Byron Riemann felt it was appropriate to request the audit following a collision along Highway 9 south of Irricana April 20 that claimed three lives.
