Collicut Siding Golf Course to host amateur PGA tournament qualifier

Collicutt Siding Golf Course will play host to a tournament on July 1, with the competition’s winning team having the chance to earn a spot in a national amateur PGA tournament later this year.

The Crossfield-based course will host a qualifier for the RBC PGA Scramble – an annual series of golf tournaments that ultimately lead to a national final. The event at Collicutt Siding Golf Course will be one of more than 150 qualifiers taking place for the 2021 iteration of the scramble, according to Cole Crawford, a spokesperson for RBC.

Crawford said the winning team of four golfers from each qualifier advances to one of 11 regional finals. From there, teams have the opportunity to qualify for the national final, which will be held later this year at Cabot Links in Nova Scotia – one of Canada's most prestigious golf courses, according to Crawford. He added the scramble is open to any amateur golfers in Canada over the age of 19 with an up-to-date Golf Canada handicap.

“Because the scoring is based on a handicap system, the winners can range from all skill levels,” he said. “RBC and the PGA really want to make a program that includes all amateur golfers across the country, regardless of skill level, and that’s why we encourage anyone who is interested to come out.”

The winner of the Crossfield qualifier will advance to a regional final taking place in Canmore in September.

Crawford added RBC is encouraging women to sign up for the qualifiers, noting the 2020 scramble – which did not include a national final due to COVID-19 – saw a 73 per cent increase in female participation compared to 2019. He said there is a spot reserved for an all-female team at each regional final.

If COVID-related restrictions lead to the postponement or relocation of the national final at Cabot Links, Crawford said participating teams will be notified.

“Obviously, all COVID-19 health policies will be in place and as for the national final, we’ll keep everyone updated as that goes along,” he said.
