According to a press release from the Cochrane RCMP, William Rider was identified, arrested and charged on Jan. 7 for offences that occurred on that date, as well as Dec. 27, 2020.

"On Dec. 27 2020 Cochrane RCMP received reports of a vehicle theft, vehicle break ins and a break-and-enter in the Springbank area," the release stated. "The quick police response resulted in the recovery of the vehicle, which was linked to three separate offences in the rural area."

Less than two weeks later, RCMP stated they responded to another vehicle theft involving Rider. According to the release, the owner of the stolen truck "was dragged a short distance" while attempting to stop the 18-year-old.

"With the assistance of Calgary Police, Cochrane RCMP were able to recover the truck and arrest William Rider again," it stated.

Rider currently faces multiple charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, mischief, robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and numerous breaches of condition charges, such as break-and-enter and theft pending.

"One person or a small group of offenders can cause a large amount issues for a community," said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff of the Cochrane RCMP. "By focusing our efforts on these select few, we can have the greatest impact."

Rider is set to appear in court on Jan. 13.
