Mixing music with a day at the beach, the City of Chestermere is set to launch its free annual music festival on Aug. 13 at John Peake Park.

“Enjoy the sounds of the summer by the shores of Chestermere Lake,” read a City of Chestermere press release.

The Chestermere Music Festival, previously known as the Water Festival, has been re-branded to emphasize the musical aspect of the event and has been changed from the yearly July date to August, according to the City of Chestermere special events planner, Nancie Huneault.

“We felt that it was something that we needed to do in August instead of July because there was a lot going on, a lot of activities going on in July but not so much in August,” she said.

To kick off the Saturday festival, vendor tents will be set up for business at 11 a.m and will remain open until 4 p.m. The market will feature local vendors selling home and craft items, jewellery, and clothing, Huneault said.

A children's tent will provide entertainment to Chestermere’s little ones beginning at noon and running until 4 p.m. Families can enjoy a round of mini golf, try their hand at axe throwing, and watch a performance by Gustavo The Impossiblist, an animated artist, starting at 1:30 p.m.

Additional children's activities will include jugglers, airbrush tattoos, and a balloon artist, according to Huneault.

For the adults, a beer garden will be providing fresh brews from 3 to 10:30 p.m.

Seven food trucks will take up residence in the park, supplying nourishment for the hungry music fan.

According to Huneault, the trucks will be serving up Greek and Vietnamese cuisine, alongside The Dogfather, a well-known hot dog vendor. Krave will also be offering its gourmet burgers and fries. Ice cream and mini doughnuts will be available for purchase as well.

Musicians hit the park pavilion stage at 1 p.m., bringing Chestermere residents an evening of country and rock-n-roll music, with the Rocky Mountain Maniacs kicking off the evening's performances.

“We’ve got an amazing lineup, some very new, talented performers coming onto the stage this year,” Huneault said. “We’re just excited to host something for the community.”

Justine Vandergrift takes the stage after the Rocky Mountain Maniacs, followed by The Blenders, which is led by local Chestermere musician Blair Supple. Girl Haggard hits the stage at 5:15 p.m., with Sarah Curle belting out country songs thereafter. Robert Gosse will be performing fan-favourite party and anthem songs at 7:45 p.m.

The music festival headliner, Will Randall, will close the festival, taking the stage at 9 p.m. Previously seen on Canadian Idol, Randall will be singing his country hits.

To wrap up the event, fireworks will be lighting up the night sky at 10:30 p.m.

“Our performer plays up to the fireworks, sometimes through the fireworks, and then we’re pretty much done by 11 p.m.,” Huneault said.

Music festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets so they can sit and enjoy the music on the park grass, Huneault recommended. Fresh and free water will be available in the park, so residents should bring their own reusable water bottle.

Throughout the festival, the Chestermere boat launch will be completely closed, meaning boats cannot be launched or retrieved on Aug. 13.

Additionally, there will not be parking available at the park. However, accessible parking will be accommodated. Though, street parking will be available, Huneault said.
