City of Chestermere launches community banner project

The City of Chestermere is inviting residents to flex their creative muscles and submit ideas for a new set of banners that will be displayed in Anniversary Park this summer.

The project is an annual initiative championed by the Chestermere Streetscape Committee, a volunteer group funded by the municipality that aims to introduce projects to beautify the community and create a more welcoming environment around town.

“The idea behind our community banner project is community pride and participation,” said Bea Germain, chair of the Chestermere Streetscape Committee, in a City press release. “The project is open to all residents, and we are encouraging people to use these banners to tell the community what living in Chestermere means to them.”

The Streetscape Committee has been involved in other “beautification” projects in the city, such as a veterans’ banner program and a recent Rain Barrel Contest, which provides residents an opportunity to showcase their decorating skills and rain harvesting techniques by creating innovative water capturing systems.

The recent banner project encourages residents to submit designs featuring photos and short text or quotes that illustrate community members’ favourite local activities. This could include photos of pets, family, hobbies, or even a photo of a Chestermere Lake sunset.

Germain added the committee’s goal is to have the first batch of banners on display sometime in June.

“We will continue to accept new banner applications from the community each year, as banners will be placed in storage each fall, and then re-hung each spring along with any new submissions we receive,” she said.

The cost to participate in the banner project is $80 for one side of a banner. Once paid, the banners will be reviewed and approved by members of the Streetscape Committee. They will then be sent for printing, before they are produced and displayed in Anniversary Park from spring to fall each year.

Applications may be edited for appropriateness and text length. Residents who would like to participate in the contest are encouraged to visit bit.ly/3fNFhMV in order to complete an entry form.
