The Irricana Christmas on Main Street event is coming back to the town Dec. 7. The annual event takes place throughout Irricana and includes a variety of family-friendly games and activities.

Irricana's annual Christmas on Main Street event will offer fun activities for the whole family Dec. 7, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Now in its seventh year, Christmas on Main Street has become a staple for those in the small rural community who wish to share in some holiday cheer. “It’s just about trying to get that small-town feel back for Christmas,” said Cathryn Hagel, vice-president of the Irricana Agricultural Society and an organizer of the event. “It’s just a great way to get to know your neighbours and your community.” According to Hagel, this year’s festivities will include caroling, horse-drawn wagon rides, and free hotdogs and drinks – as well as face painting, arts and crafts, games and colouring stations for young children. The annual tradition has grown in popularity over the years, Hagel added. “Every year, there are more and more [people who come],” she said. “We go through 200 to 300 hotdogs, so I’m assuming that’s one per person, though it’s hard to say. The face painter is also very busy with all the kids.” In keeping with the theme, Santa Claus will pay a visit to the town around 6 p.m. Ol’ St. Nick will arrive at the Grasshopper Gallery accompanied by the Irricana fire department, to spread some further Christmas joy to attendees. Most of the festivities will be held on Main Street, Hagel said, though events will also take place at the library, community hall and other venues around town. The Irricana preschool will hold a Christmas market during the same time, she added. “They see a lot of foot traffic, which is really good,” Hagel said. Having been involved with the event since its beginning, Hagel said her favourite part of Christmas on Main Street is seeing the little kids run around and enjoy themselves, regardless of the weather. “We’ve had it in -30 C weather and 3 C weather,” she said. “The turnout is always fantastic and everyone looks like they have a great time, getting to know each other and celebrating Christmas together.” Christmas on Main Street is funded by various organizations and businesses around Irricana, Hagel said, with each sponsoring their own component or activities.
