Building burns in Beiseker

A fire in Beiseker has left three families and a local business displaced.

Crews from Beiseker, Irricana, Crossfield and Acme were called out to the blaze at 218 6 Street around 4 p.m. May 28. The building houses three apartment units and a business – listed on Google as Hair Heaven Nail and Spa.

According to Beiseker Fire Chief Bob Ursu, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“We have an investigator coming [from Rocky View County Fire Services], so we’re not positive what happened yet,” he said.

A man in the apartment unit that where the fire occurred was sent to hospital due to smoke inhalation, according to Ursu. He said the four fire departments on-site worked together to quickly extinguish the blaze, but one apartment unit was destroyed and the remainder of the building suffered smoke and water damage.

“We managed to contain the fire to the one apartment, but until the investigators get in there and check out the structure, we don’t know for sure what the damage is,” he said.

According to Ursu, the call was the Beiseker Volunteer Fire Department’s (BVFD) first fire to contend with since Sept. 18, 2015, when a fire heavily damaged the village’s historic, century-old railway station.
