Coun. Greg Boehlke will serve another year as Rocky View County’s (RVC) reeve after his colleagues elected him Oct. 22, during council’s annual organizational meeting.

“I thank council for the confidence shown in me,” Boehlke said after taking the oath of office.

This marks Boehlke’s fifth consecutive term as the head of council – he was first elected to the position in 2015.

The election was not uncontested – while Coun. Al Schule nominated Boehlke, Coun. Samanntha Wright nominated Coun. Crystal Kissel. Elections at the organizational meeting are held by secret ballot, and therefore, Boehlke’s margin of victory is unknown.

Despite a tumultuous year for council, Boehlke said he’s optimistic RVC can move in a positive direction and plans to do what he can to that end.

“We can’t let this get us down into the mud,” he said. “We’ve got day-to-day business…. It’s exciting and there’s so many good things that are happening here that council is endorsing and bringing forward. I think that far outweighs any of the discrepancies that are going on between councillors.”

Schule was granted a second term as deputy reeve, after being nominated for the role by Coun. Kim McKylor and beating out Coun. Kevin Hanson, who was nominated by Kissel.

“I’m glad [my colleagues] felt I deserve another year to try to move the County forward,” Schule said. “I think over the last year or so, there’s been a lot of milestones set, moving a lot of things ahead. Now, we need to try to finish them. Contrary to what’s being said around, I think we’ve got a good council, and I hope we can continue looking at the best interests of RVC.”

At the meeting, council appointed members both from its ranks and from the public to a number of boards and committees. After two years as head of council’s Governance and Priorities committee, McKylor will step aside from the post to make way for Coun. Jerry Gautreau. McKylor declined a nomination by Coun. Daniel Henn, and was instead elected as vice-chair of the committee.

McKylor will head council’s newly formed Recreation Governance Committee, which was established by bylaw on Sept. 24, as part of RVC’s new county-wide recreation model. Gautreau was appointed vice-chair.

Henn will chair the Agricultural Service Board (ASB) for the third consecutive year, joined by McKylor and Coun. Mark Kamachi. McKylor and Kamachi will also sit on the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Board. Henn will sit on the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB), with McKylor serving as alternate.

Wright, Hanson and Kissel were not appointed to any boards or committees. The three councillors remain under sanction, one of which removed them from all boards and committees until council’s organizational meeting in October 2020.

The three councillors initially nominated their sanctioned colleagues for several positions, but were told by Boehlke those nominations could not be accepted and were later accused of “grandstanding” by Gautreau when they persisted.

Several members of the public were appointed to bodies, including the Bragg Creek Fire Smart Committee, the Assessment Review Board, SDAB, FCSS Board and ASB. Prospective members submitted applications in advance to be considered for the posts.
