Ukrainian children leaving behind their war-torn country and arriving in Cochrane will be given a bike by the Kiwanis Club.

The club will be collecting gently-used children’s bikes April 20 and 21.

“We take the bikes that are in decent shape,” Gosselin said. “They may have a few problems or a kid has outgrown their bike and there is nothing wrong with it.”
Anyone who would like to donate a bike can contact Ron Gosselin at [email protected].

Gosselin is the past president and founding director of the Kiwanis Club of Cochrane. He said they have been collecting and recycling bikes into the community for about three years now.

They have given the bikes to children in need.

“We supported a family that came in Syrian after eight years living in a camp,” Gosselin said.

We offered them some bikes and they really enjoyed them.”

Gosselin said Kiwanis is focused on children and said bikes are a great way to for kids to have fun.

“We want to make sure kids have a smile on their face and can grow in intellectual and physical aspects,” he said.

Bikes collected will be taken to a bike recycler who checks that everything is working safely before they are handed over to their new owner.

Gosselin said they will work with the Activettes to identify children who could use a bike.

He is looking forward to seeing kids fleeing the Ukraine biking around Cochrane.

“They can exercise and enjoy the summer,” he said.
