Arrest made in Bearspaw, Springbank mail thefts

Cochrane RCMP made a significant breakthrough in the Cochrane Crime Reduction Unit (CCRU) investigation of mail thefts in Bearspaw and Springbank, according to Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, following the arrest of 39-year-old Jason Bryan.

The mail thefts targeted identification and credit cards, which would then be used at stores, casinos, rental car companies and hotels in the Calgary area.

“We started pulling files in which these items were being used and going into the various locations around Calgary and pulling video surveillance footage of different suspects who were using the IDs,” Savinkoff said.

From that investigation, and with the help of other RCMP detachments and police services, Savinkoff said, the detachment was able to uncover co-operation between individuals who kept popping up in the footage.

“We began looking into who those suspects might be, and last week, we were able to discover one of the suspects was a B.C. male who was actually on a tracking device in B.C. but had removed it,” Savinkoff said.

Cochrane RCMP now has charges pending against Bryan on four counts of possession of stolen mail, three counts of credit card fraud, two counts of identity fraud, one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and nine counts of failure to comply with conditions of a recognisance.

Savinkoff reminds all residents to make their vehicles and residences as unappealing to potential thieves as possible by securing doors and keeping car keys, wallets, cash, and passports out of vehicles, as well as reporting any suspicious behaviour.
