Two women were declared deceased at the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 9, north of Irricana on Dec. 22, at 12:40 a.m.

Airdrie RCMP as well as Rocky View County Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to a 911 call and located two cars with significant damage at the scene. According to an RCMP press release, the collision occurred just south of Range Road 262.

The RCMP Collision analyst attended the scene to assist with the investigation. A preliminary investigation indicates the car travelling southbound on Highway 9 crossed the centre line and collided with the northbound car.

Traffic was diverted while the collision scene was investigated.

RCMP Cpl. Tammy Keibel said all contributing factors are still being investigated. An RCMP media release stated alcohol was not believed to be a contributing factor.

The southbound vehicle was driven by a lone female driver in her 70s, while the northbound vehicle was driven by a lone female driver in her 50s.

"This is a really difficult time for the families to be dealing with such a tragedy. So just take extra care this holiday season in your travels," Keibel said.

RCMP added the names of the deceased will not be released.
