Bearspaw residents are fighting to preserve their community and their way of life, however, some councillors don’t appear to see it that way. The Feb. 12 Rocky View County council meeting seemed to demonstrate this when the majority of council attempted to push the item through, despite 42 separate residences submitting letters of opposition. While the application did comply with RVC policy, and the development would likely be a revenue source for all involved parties and could help keep Calgary from attempting to gobble up the area, the opposition remains loud in its displeasure. Surely, this should have caused council to take pause and ask why that is. Two similar developments in the area were also met by strong opposition and were not approved by previous councils. It is council’s role to ensure the County remains a viable municipality, and that does usually mean development, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of residents’ voices. Bearspaw is more than a gap between Calgary and Cochrane – to those living there, it is a community, a way of life and something to fight for. Council might want to keep this in mind when the item returns Feb. 26.
