That's a wrap

Many of you are likely happy to see the campaigning for the 2019 provincial election come to a close.

Many of you are likely happy to see the campaigning for the 2019 provincial election come to a close. But we think it is important to recognize the record numbers of Albertans who took the time to participate in the democratic process by casting their ballot at advance polls.

A record 696,000 Albertans marked an “X” by the candidate of their choice throughout the five days of advance polling, according to Elections Alberta. That is almost triple the number of votes cast at advance polls than in the 2015 general election.

This trend appears to have continues throughout the election, with some new outlets suggesting upwards of 70 per cent of Albertans voted in the 30th Alberta General Election, which is amazing.

We at Airdrie City View would like to send a sincerest of thanks to all the candidates, who put it on the line and stepped up to attempt to represent their beliefs, values and the people in their riding. Running for office in a provincial election is hard work and often takes candidates away from family, friends and their jobs.

Campaigning in an age of Internet and social media opens candidates up more than ever before to all manners of scrutiny, ridicule and heartbreak, so we applaud those who took the risk and joined the race.

If you didn't take the time to vote, you have four years of someone else’s choice. Let’s hope you like who Alberta has selected. If you don’t, you have no one but yourself to blame.
