Reducing crime risk

The move by Rocky View County (RVC) council to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Airdrie RCMP to continue supporting a County-funded position within the detachment’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) will surely have many residents pleased. We have heard over the last few years from residents that crime in rural areas is on the rise. Thought RCMP don’t support that claim, no one can deny the impact of the CRU. In its coverage area within the County, Airdrie RCMP report a 24 per cent decrease in property crime since the CRU came into effect in early 2018. Though Airdrie Detachment Commander Insp. Kimberley Pasloske didn’t have exact numbers on hand, she told council the decrease in the County was more than double that of the city of Airdrie. That is impressive, and its something that should be supported. It is a relief to see council appreciates the value of the unit and continues to provide its support. With the county forming a horseshoe around the city of Calgary, we have reported on more and more instances of criminals spreading out from the city to areas within the county. While the County can’t build a wall to separate the municipality from its neighbours, it can ensure adequate policing to help protect residents and their property. We applaud council for recognizing the importance of this and committing to another year of support.
