Put democracy first

After years of stalling on any sort of meaningful health reform, the Progressive Conservatives tried one more time to convince the public that they are taking action with the firing of Stephen Duckett as head of the health superboard.

After years of stalling on any sort of meaningful health reform, the Progressive Conservatives tried one more time to convince the public that they are taking action with the firing of Stephen Duckett as head of the health superboard.

Duckett or no Duckett, it’s clear this government doesn’t have any answers for the problems plaguing its health system. The major plan at this time seems to be politicians taking a long winter break, getting away from the daily beating in the Legislature, and avoiding the issue altogether. Hiding from the public seems to be this government’s specialty. It cancelled Senate elections to avoid an embarrassing drubbing at the hands of Wildrose Alliance candidates, and has kicked two MLAs out of caucus to date for speaking out on important issues.

It was no coincidence Wildrose leader Danielle Smith chose last week to release her party’s plan for democratic reform.

The plan includes legislation to allow citizen initiated referendums, voter recall and fixed election dates.

It is the plan meant to put the people back in charge of their government, something the PCs have worked hard to avoid.

Remember, this provincial government once voted against one of its own MLA’s private members’ bill to institute fixed election dates.

Fixed elections are endorsed by both the Wildrose and the provincial Liberals. It begs the question, if you oppose reforms endorsed by both the Wildrose and the Liberals, just how far from the pack have you strayed?

Don’t expect an answer any time soon.
