Press releases aren't solutions

Premier Stelmach issued a press release last week, stating he’s “tiring of recent theatrics” and everybody should focus on improving health care. No kidding. Albertans are also sick and tired of the theatrics surrounding our broken health system.

Premier Stelmach issued a press release last week, stating he’s “tiring of recent theatrics” and everybody should focus on improving health care.

No kidding.

Albertans are also sick and tired of the theatrics surrounding our broken health system.

We’re tired of worthless studies and plans, commissioned by the government and paid for by taxpayers, to see no concrete improvements.

We’re tired of empty promises from a government that has been in charge for 40 years, yet refuses to accept responsibility for its mistakes.

We’re tired of the ridiculous election-campaign posturing over the issue, only to see wait times grow as fast as health care costs.

We’re tired of a government preaching efficiency while it shuffles longtime party faithful into health bureaucracy and allows managers to give themselves massive bonuses.

It’s no surprise to us that Premier Stelmach is asking people to stop “appointing blame.” That’s because the blame rests with his party, his government and the unelected managers they have hired. Will anything come of the premier’s sudden and intense interest in fixing health care? Maybe. But if history teaches us anything, it’s that this government is good at press releases and bad at taking action.

The premier may be tiring of recent theatrics, but it’s clear that Albertans are tiring of this government.
