Necessary intervention

A petition to Alberta Municipal Affairs (MA) has been initiated by disgruntled residents of Rocky View County (RVC) seeking an investigation into County operations – and we’re hoping residents can look past any partisan views and consider what’s best for the entire county.

While the sanctions imposed on three RVC councillors have dominated our local headlines for months, there have been a number of other concerns raised since this council was elected in 2017. From the announcement of the hiring of the current CAO prior to a resolution of council to the repealing of the Firearms Bylaw and the scrapping of the Aggregate Resource Plan, it seems things aren’t always proceeding according to policy.

An investigation into the decision-making and behind-the-scenes workings that led to some of council’s most controversial moves would certainly put a lot of minds at ease – providing assurance that, despite the tumultuous atmosphere within council chambers, County governance is being handled appropriately and with care.

Our recent poll results indicate residents are worried the constant bickering is having an impact on operations, and many believe mediation would be a beneficial step. But that suggestion was shot down by a council majority, indicating most members have little interest in peaceably resolving the internal conflict.

Perhaps an impartial investigation could shine new light on the increasing drama so our representatives can get back to doing the jobs we elected them to do.
